Abidjan:
Abidjan
is regarded as the heart of the Ivory Coast. The city is situated
off the Gulf of Guinea, southeast of the Ivorian capital of Yamoussoukro.
Abidjan’s status of Ivory Coast’s capital was relinquished
to Yamoussoukro in 1983. The city is the largest in Cote d’Ivoire
with a population of 3.7 million people.
Abidjan grew in the early 20th century when it became the capital
of the French Colony at the Ivory Coast. Presently, Abidjan
is the main economic centre of the country and is home to a number
of the country’s key industries; motor vehicle, food
processing, petroleum refinery, port activities, textiles,
chemicals, pharmaceuticals
and lumber.
