Abuja:
Situated
in central Nigeria, Abuja is the country’s capital city
and one of its largest; home to an estimated 2.5 million people.
Abuja
is a planned city whose construction began in the late 1970s.
The city was built to replace Lagos as the Nigerian
capital which had
become overcrowded, limiting avenues for development and physical
planning. Abuja became the Nigerian capital officially on the
12th of December 1991.
The city is home to the Nigerian government and a number of
embassies have since relocated here from Lagos. The city is served
by the Nnamdi Azikiwe international airport which serves a number
of domestic and international flights.
The city’s key icon
is the “Aso Rock”. The rock left bare after long
periods of erosion, stands out in the outskirts of the town at
about 400 meters high. The city also has a museum and a number
of cultural centers.
