Accra:
Accra
is Ghana’s capital city and the largest city in the country.
It is situated on the Gulf of Guinea in southern Ghana and is central
to the country’s administration and economy. Accra was
established by the Ga people at about the 16th century as a trading
post.
A
number of forts were built here during following centuries
by the Portuguese, French, Danish, British and the Dutch. This
was
possibly
in an attempt to establish their influence here. Accra became
the administrative capital of the British Gold Coast Colony
in 1877.
Accra is an important centre for education, history and culture.
The city is home to the University of Ghana as well as a number
of tertiary schools and colleges.
Accra is also the location
for the National Theatre, National Museum, African Cultural
Centre and Archives. Notable sites within the city are; the Kwame
Nkrumah
Memorial and the Independence Arch.
Regarded as one of the most entertaining cities on the continent,
Accra is home to a number of beaches, hotels, restaurants as
well as a thriving nightlife.
