Algiers:
Algiers
is the capital and largest city in Algeria. The city is situated
in northern Algeria off the Mediterranean. Algiers was founded
in 944 by Buluggin ibn Ziri of the Zirid-Senhaja dynasty. The
city then became the administrative center for the French colony
in
Algeria in 1830.
Algiers is a city with a good mix of the old
and new. In the new section of the city you can find a variety
of modern
buildings and complexes while in the old town areas, there
are a number of interesting buildings some centuries old.
These
include
mosques, palaces, ancient town walls and church buildings.
Notable icons in Algiers include: the Monument of the Martyrs
and the
Jamaa el Jedid mosque. The city also has a number of museums
showcasing
the rich traditional culture and history of the country’s
people.
For entertainment; the city has a number of decent hotels, restaurants,
pubs, shopping centers, traditional market stalls and movie theatres.
Transport:
Getting around the city is fairly easy and transport consists
mainly of public buses and taxis. Algiers is also home to the
Houari Boumedienne International airport. This is the main airport
in the country and provides a key link to domestic and international
air destinations.
