Angola
is one of the major football playing nations in Southern Africa.
The country’s national team won the COSAFA cup a regional
tournament in 1999, 2001 and 2004. This tournament features strong
competition with the likes of South Africa, Zimbabwe and Zambia.
The country has also participated at the 1996, 1998 and 2006 Africa
Nations Cup tournaments.
The national team known locally as “Palancas Negras”,
was one of the surprise qualifiers for the 2006 World Cup in
Germany. Angola was placed in a tough group which featured the
likes of Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Gabon and Algeria.
Under the guidance of Coach Luis Oliveira Goncalves and Captain

of itself at the World Cup. Angola lost its first game against
Portugal 1-0, drew with Mexico 0-0 and also drew its final match
against Iran 1-1.
