Antananarivo
is the capital and largest city of Madagascar. The city is also
the administrative capital of Antananarivo Province. The City has
a population of about 1.5 million people and is situated in central
Madagascar. Antananarivo is christened “the City of a Thousand
Warriors”, due to its historical significance. Antananarivo
was established in the early 17th Century and became the capital
of the Merina Empire in 1793. It later became the administrative
capital of the French colony and independent Madagascar.
The city has developed greatly since independence and is the
center of trade and commerce in the country. As a major hub for
tourism and travel, Antananarivo has a decent selection of hotels,
restaurants and pubs. Crime however continues to be a problem
here.
Transport in Antananarivo:
Transport within the city is mainly by buses and minibuses.
There are also buses that regularly travel to other towns and
cities in Madagascar. Antananarivo is served by the Ivato International
Airport; the key airport in the country catering for domestic
and international flights.
Tourism in Antananarivo:
There are a number of interesting places to visit in the city
such as; the local craft markets selling a variety of interesting
curio items, the zoological park and museum, the prime-ministerial
palace, the crocodile farm and the historic palace.
