Bahir
Dar situated near the shores of Lake Tana, is one of Ethiopia’s
prominent cities. The City established around the 16th Century
is presently the administrative capital of the Amhara Region. The
City is linked to Addis Ababa by regular public bus services. Ethiopian
Airlines also operates regular flights from the Bole Airport in
Addis landing at the Bahir Dar Airport.
Bahir Dar is also a bustling and fast developing city, home
to a number of banking and financial institutions, industries
and institutes of higher learning. For entertainment, the city
has a number of restaurants, cinema, pubs and nightclubs. Leading
hotels in the town include; the Ghion Hotel and the Tana Hotel,
amply located at the shore of Lake Tana.
Tourism and travel:
Bahir Dar features prominently on the local tourism itinerary
as it is here that most visitors embark on their tour of the
Blue Nile. This includes the view of the magnificent Blue Nile
Falls. Other attractions in Bahir Dar are the old palatial ruins;
and the churches and monasteries on the islands of Lake Tana.
