Benghazi:
Benghazi
is Libya’s second largest city and one of the most populous
in the country. The city is situated on the country’s northern
coast off the Mediterranean to the east of Tripoli. The city got
its name from “Sidi Ghazi” a key figure in the founding
of Benghazi.
The area around Benghazi has been settled for centuries and
it is in the outskirts of the city that the ancient Greek city
of Berenice was founded around 446 BCE. The ruins of this historic
city are a key attraction for visitors to Benghazi. Another interesting
place to visit from Benghazi is the ancient city of Cyrene. The
city was the first of the Greek cities to be founded in the region
and although now mostly in ruins, it provides an insight into
ancient Greek civilization.
Benghazi can be reached by road from Tripoli, though the city
is also served by the Benina International Airport. The airport
caters for regular flights from Tripoli and other African cities.
