Burkina Faso is ranked amongst the poorest countries in the world. The country lacks in sufficient natural resources and unfavorable weather conditions greatly hamper farming efforts. Agriculture is the mainstay of the country’s economy providing a source of employment for close to 90% of the population.

Cotton is the chief export commodity and major industries are food processing, textiles, gold mining, cotton lint processing and cigarettes.
