Butare:
Butare
is an historic City in Rwanda and was the first capital of the
Country a status it held until 1965 when it was replaced by Kigali.
Butare now known as Huye has a population of about 80,000 people
and is linked to Kigali by road. Public transport consisting of
buses and matatus; provide transport linking the city with other
towns around the Country.
The City was home to the Country’s monarchy which has
been based here since the late 18th Century. The Royal Palace
built in traditional fashion has been largely restored and
houses a museum which displays the rich history and culture of
the Rwandese
People.
The National Museum of Rwanda is the town’s premier tourist
attraction. The museum houses an extensive collection of traditional
artifacts on the history and development of the Rwanda people.
