Football
is the most popular sport in Cameroon. The sport has grown steadily
since the country’s independence and presently, Cameroon
is ranked amongst the leading football nations in Africa. The national
team “the indomitable lions” is the most successful
on the continent.
The team has won the Africa nations cup four times and the Olympic
gold in football at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Cameroon first
represented Africa at the FIFA world cup in 1982 but bowed out
at the group stages.
The team then returned at the 1990 world
cp in Italy when it surprised the world by beating a Maradona
led Argentina and making it to the second round. The team beat
Colombia in the second round (2-1) and lost to England (3-2).
Famous players include; Roger Milla, Emanuel Kunde, Rigobert
Song, Patrick Mboma, Raymond Kalla, Joseph Antoine Bell, Thomas
N’kono, Pierre Wome.
