The Comoros Government:

Comoros has had a tumultuous history since its independence. The Country’s government has changed hands about a dozen times through coups. A new constitution aimed at bringing lasting peace to the Union of the Comoros was approved by the Country’s people and adopted in December 2001. A year later (May 2002), Presidential elections were held and won by Ahmed Abdallah Mohamed Sambi. Legislative elections were held in 2004. The Country has multi-party system with political parties including;

-The Camp of the Autonomous Islands
-FNJ- Front National pour la Justice
-Convention for the Renewal of the Comoros
- MDP-NGDC- Mouvement pour la Democratie et le Progress.

Federal System:

Each of the Comoros islands; Nzwani, Moheli and Grande Comore are headed by its own elected President. This is in accordance with changes to the new constitution of the Country adopted in 2001 which allowed for a federal-style government. An elected union President is in charge of the country as a whole.
