Conakry:
Conakry
is the capital and largest city of Guinea. The city is situated
on the shores of the North Atlantic Ocean to the southwest of
the country. Conakry initially developed on the island of Tumbo
on
the Kaloum Peninsula and presently the city’s boundaries
reach well into the mainland.
The city was established in the late
19th century when Guinea became a French colony. Conakry is
an important economic center in Guinea and port activities
employ
a large part of the city’s population. There are also a
number of processing industries here. The city is also home to
the University
of Conakry, the main tertiary institution in Guinea.
Conakry is linked to inland Guinea by road and rail. The city
is also served by the Gbessia International Airport.
