Dakar:
Dakar
is the capital city of Senegal. The city is also the most populous
in the country, home to an estimated 2 million people. The city
is situated on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean in western Senegal.
Dakar, founded at around the 15th century, grew
rapidly in following centuries as a key port on the trans-Atlantic
trade route. The
city became the capital of Senegal in 1957 and is home to the
Presidential palace as well as the country’s parliament.
The city is close to a number of good beaches and other interesting
places to see are the cultural centre, local markets, zoo and
animal orphanage and religious buildings. The Paris-Dakar rally
which culminates here is a popular road race held annually.
Presently, Port activities form a major part of the city’s
economy. Dakar is served by the Leopold Senghor International
Airport.
