Djibouti City:
The
City of Djibouti is the Capital of the Country and by far the
largest urban center in Djibouti. A large percentage of the
country’s
population (about to 80%) live in the city. Djibouti City has
an estimated population of 428,500 people.
The City was declared
the
Capital of the independent nation in 1977, though it had obtained
this status 1891 as the administrative center of the French
Colony. Djibouti is at present the main center for trade and
commerce
in the country. The city is home to some of the largest traditional
markets, hotels, businesses, banks and a selection of restaurants.
The beaches here are a popular tourist attraction. Lake Asal
in
the Afar Depression is easily reachable by road from Djibouti.
Transport in Djibouti:
Djibouti is an important transport hub for the Country. The
port here established more than a century ago serves the country
and provides a point of entry for goods on transit to neighboring
landlocked nations. The City is also home to the Ambouli International
Airport, situated about 4 km from the city centre. The airport
is the sole international airport in the country and is home
to Djibouti Airlines, the national flag carrier.
