Djibouti Economy:
One
of the poorest countries on the continent, Djibouti has limited
natural resources. The country relies mainly on foreign aid.
The Country has a very large external debt. The services sector
employs
a large percentage of the local population. Agriculture is a
key economic activity though drought and unreliable rainfall
continue
to pose serious problems.
Many Djiboutians outside of the Capital
are nomadic pastoralists herding cattle, sheep and goats. Agricultural
produce found here includes; vegetables and fruits. Fishing
off the country’s coast is also widely practiced.
Industries: an infant industrial sector, the main industries
in Djibouti are; construction, food processing and salt extraction
from Lake Asal.
Currency:
The Djiboutian Franc (DJF) is the official currency of Djibouti.
The currency is closely tied to the French Franc from which it
was adopted. French and Arabic are used on banknotes and coins.
