The government of Djibouti:
Prior
to the establishment of a colony in Djibouti, different clans and
tribes established their own forms of government and controlled
their own territories. The French arrived here in the second half
of the 19th century and established a colony by 1896. Djibouti
got its independence in 1977.
Hassan Gouled Aptidon became its
first elected president, slowly asserting his authority and
ruled the country until 1999. At present, the country enjoys
a multi-party
democracy as part of changes to its constitution approved by
a public referendum in 1992.
The first multi-party elections in the country were held in
1999 and were won by Ismail Omar Guelleh. Presidential elections
are held every six years while legislative elections are held
every five.
