At
present, Djibouti’s population consists of Issa-Somali, Afar,
Arab and people of European origin (mainly French). The Issa and
Afar were the first groups to settle in the Country. The Country
also has a large population of refugees from neighboring Somalia
and Ethiopia.
The Issa-Somali are the largest ethnic group in the country
and account for about 60 % of the population.
Islam which at
present is the main religion in Djibouti was introduced in
the region by Arab merchants who constantly interacted with locals.
Christianity also exists and is practiced by a small part of
the population. Djibouti currently has an estimated population
of 486,530 people.
Languages: Arabic and French are the official languages of Djibouti
though Afar and Somali are widely spoken. Arabic and French
are also the main languages used in the country’s education
syllabus.
