Sports in Djibouti:
Though
not a major participant in the international scene; soccer is the
most popular team sport in Djibouti. The national team christened “Young
Red Sea” has only played a handful of matches in recent years
and did not participate in the 2003 Cecafa Challenge Cup. The team
also missed out on the Africa Cup and World Cup Qualifiers. There
is a healthy club competition held in the Country.
Athletics:
Djibouti made its mark on the international athletics arena
when its most successful athlete to date; Hussein Ahmed Salah
won the Bronze medal at the 1987 Athletics World Championships
held in the City of Rome.
Hussein achieved the same feat in the
following year at the Olympic Games in Seoul, Korea and at
the 1991 Athletics World Championships in Tokyo. Since his retirement,
medals at international meets have been rare for Djibouti.
