Sports in Ghana:
Football
is the most popular sport in Ghana, widely appreciated by the country’s
population. The country however does excel in a variety of other
sporting disciplines such as athletics, boxing, volleyball and
basketball.
The Ghanaian National Soccer team known as “Black
Stars” has
for decades been one of the top teams in Africa. The Black Stars
have won the Africa Nations Cup four times (1963, 1965, 1978
and 1982). The team made its debut at the FIFA world cup in Germany
in 2006, reaching the second round after impressive performances
against Italy (lost 2-0), before beating the United States (2-1)
and Czech Republic (2-0).
Famous players include; the legendary Abedi Pele, Samuel Kuffour,
Stephen Appiah, Mathew Amoah, Asamoah Gyan, Michael Essien.
