Ghana:
Ghana
is a West African nation off the Gulf of Guinea, between the Ivory
Coast and Togo. The country is a former British Colony which was
amongst the first nations in sub-Saharan Africa to attain its independence.
Ghana officially became independent on the 6th of March 1967, with
Kwame Nkrumah as its first president.
Nkrumah was known for his
promotion of the Pan-African movement which advocate for an
Africa free of colonial interference. He was ousted in a military
coup
in 1966. This brought about a period of political instability
and the country was ruled by a series of military coups. A
new constitution
was adopted in 1992 paving the way for democratic elections.
These were won by Jerry Rawlings, a former lieutenant. The
country has
since been relatively stable and elections are held regularly.
Administration:
Ghana is divided into ten administrative regions with Accra
as its capital city. These are; shanti, Brong-Ahafo, Central,
Eastern, Greater Accra, Northern, Upper East, Upper West, Volta,
Western.
People: Ghana is home to an estimated 22, 409, 572 people. The
country’s official language is English though a number
of local dialects are widely spoken.
