Ghana:

Ghana is a West African nation off the Gulf of Guinea, between the Ivory Coast and Togo. The country is a former British Colony which was amongst the first nations in sub-Saharan Africa to attain its independence. Ghana officially became independent on the 6th of March 1967, with Kwame Nkrumah as its first president.

Nkrumah was known for his promotion of the Pan-African movement which advocate for an Africa free of colonial interference. He was ousted in a military coup in 1966. This brought about a period of political instability and the country was ruled by a series of military coups. A new constitution was adopted in 1992 paving the way for democratic elections. These were won by Jerry Rawlings, a former lieutenant. The country has since been relatively stable and elections are held regularly.

Administration:

Ghana is divided into ten administrative regions with Accra as its capital city. These are; shanti, Brong-Ahafo, Central, Eastern, Greater Accra, Northern, Upper East, Upper West, Volta, Western.

People: Ghana is home to an estimated 22, 409, 572 people. The country’s official language is English though a number of local dialects are widely spoken.
