d’Ivoire has for decades been a football powerhouse on the
African continent. Known as “the elephants”, the team
achieved its highest FIFA world ranking (18) in 2006.
The elephants
have appeared 18 times at the Africa Nations cup and won the
tournament in 1992, beating Ghana in a penalty shootout at
the finals in Senegal.
The country made its first appearance at the world cup in 2006
where it was placed in “the group of death” alongside
Argentina, Netherlands and Serbia Montenegro. The team put on
a strong show against much fancied opponents but failed to make
it
to the second round of the tournament.
Famous present day players include; Didier Drogba (Chelsea),
Salomon Kalou (Chelsea), Didier Zokora (Tottenham), Kolo Toure
(Arsenal), Emmanuel Eboue (Arsenal).
