Kumasi:
The
hometown of United Nations secretary general; Koffi Annan, Kumasi
is one of the largest cities in Ghana, home to more than 1.5 million
people. The city is situated in central Ghana, northwest of Accra.
Kumasi is the administrative capital of the Ashanti
region and it is the Ashanti people that form a large part
of its population.
The city is known to have developed largely during the 17th
century. This is a period within which it became the capital
of the Ashanti
Confederacy, a group of city states that thrived under the
rulership of Osei Tutu I.
The city has in recent years grown largely due to its mineral
wealth. Kumasi is one of Ghana’s gold mining areas. Other
prominent industries in the city are timber and cocoa. The
city is linked to Accra and other parts of the country by rail
and
road. There is also a small airport here which caters mainly
for domestic flights.
