Lagos:
Lagos
is Nigeria’s largest and most populous city. The city is
also regarded as one of the most populous in the continent with
an estimated population of more than 10 million people. The city
was once the capital of Nigeria, a status it held between 1914
and 1991 when it was replaced by Abuja.
The area around the present
city was initially a large Yoruba settlement as far back as
the 14th century. The city was annexed as a British colony
in 1861
and its colonization played a major part in the spread of British
influence in the surrounding region and present day Nigeria.
Lagos is still Nigeria’s key center for trade and commerce.
A number of local and international businesses are based in
the city. The city also has a thriving industrial sector and
its
port is one of the busiest along the West African coast. Other
industries in Lagos are; automobiles, textiles, food processing,
electronics, chemicals and pharmaceuticals.
Transport in Lagos: due to unplanned growth, Lagos is a congested
city especially within the city centre. Public transport within
the city is mainly by bus, mini-buses and motorbikes. The city
is also served by the Murtala Mohammed International Airport,
the busiest airport in the country.
