Libya:

The Great Socialist People’s Libyan Arab Jamahiriya (Libyan Republic), is a North African nations situated to the north of Niger and Chad; to the west of Egypt, bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the north. The country was occupied by the Ottoman Turks from the 16th century.

The Turks were eventually ousted by the Italians in 1911 and the area became an Italian protectorate until 1943, following the defeat of Italy in the 2nd World War. Libya then became a United Nations administered territory and gained its independence in 1951. Following independence, the country had a constitutional monarchy under King Idris. This lasted only till 1969 when a military coup led by, Col Muammar Abu Minyar al-Qadhafi overthrew the monarchy.

Libya is currently divided into 32 municipalities; Ajdabiya, Al Butnan, Al Hizam Al Akhdar, Al Jabal al Akhdar, Al Jfara, Al Jufrah, Al Kufrah, Al Marj, Al Murgub, An Nuqat al Khams, Al Qubah, Al Wahat, Az Zawiyah, Benghazi, Bani Walid, Darnah, Ghat, Ghadamis, Gharyan, Murzuq, Mizdah, Misratah, Nalut, Tajura Wa Al Nawahi Al Arba, Tarhuna Wa Msalata, Tarabulus, Sabha, Surt, Sabratha Wa Surman, Wadi Al Hayaaa, Wadi Al Shatii, Yafran. The country’s capital city is Tripoli.
