Lilongwe:
Lilongwe
is the capital city of Malawi, a status it has held since replacing
Zomba in 1974. The city is centrally situated and is also the administrative
capital of Lilongwe district. Lilongwe is one of the largest cities
in Malawi and is only 2nd to Blantyre. The City was established
as a small settlement along the banks of River Lilongwe in the
late 1940s. Lilongwe is important as a center for government though
its status as a major hub for trade and commerce is rivaled by
the City of Blantyre.
Transport in Lilongwe:
Lilongwe is an important transport hub. The City is linked to
the rest of the country by rail and road. Buses provide transport
from here to other towns and cities around Malawi. Transport
within the city is mainly by bus or minibuses. Taxis are available
and are run by a number of private operators. Lilongwe is served
by the Kamuzu International Airport. This is the key airport
in Malawi and one of the main hubs for Air Malawi which flies
regularly to a number of domestic and international destinations.
