Luanda is the capital and largest city of Angola. The city is
situated to the north of Porto Amboin off the South Atlantic
Ocean. Luanda has an estimated population of 4.5 million people.
The city is one of the oldest capitals in Africa having been
founded in 1575 and developing as a key port on the south-west
African coast. The city is home to a number of foreign embassies
and consulates and is the centre for trade and commerce for Angola.
Major manufacturing industries here include; crude oil extraction
and refinery, port activities (the Port of Luanda is the busiest
in Angola and an important avenue for export and import commodities),
food processing and clothing.
The city is also an important transport hub. Luanda is the starting
point of a railway line which ventures from here inland. The
use of the railway is however restricted due to damage caused
during the civil war and the line is currently undergoing rehabilitation.
From here a number of public bus services embark heading for
other towns and cities. Luanda is also home to the Quatro de
Feveiro International Airport. This is the key airport in the
country and is served by a number of international airlines.
Tourism in Luanda: the city is home to some of the best hotels
in Angola. Here you will also find a number of good beaches,
a variety of restaurants, pubs and nightclubs.
