Madagascar Economy:
Agriculture
accounts for a large percentage of the Madagascan Economy. The
country’s agricultural sector produces: coffee, vanilla,
sugarcane, cloves, cocoa, rice, cassava, beans, bananas, peanuts,
livestock products, vegetables and fruits.
Other important industries
are tourism which is steadily improving with a return to stable
government, crude oil refining, motor vehicle assembly, paper,
textiles, food and beverage processing, cement and glassware.
Socialist policies that had hampered economic growth in Madagascar
have been
dropped for more liberal strategies. Widespread corruption
continues to pose a major problem to the government’s efforts.
Currency:
The Madagascan Currency is known as the Malagasy Ariary (MGA).
The currency was introduced in 2005 to replace the Malagasy Franc
which had been in use since the French colonial period. One Ariary
is equivalent to five Iraimbilanja.
