Sports in Malawi:
Soccer
is the most popular team sport in Malawi. The team christened “the
flames” is a regular competitor in regional and continental
competitions. The Malawian national team regularly participates
in qualifiers for the Africa Nations Cup and the World Cup. Highlights
and achievements are however few and the most notable was the Bronze
medal at the 1987 All Africa Games in Nairobi. The team sole participation
at the Africa Nations cup to date was in 1984. The Country has
a healthy club competition and national soccer league.
Other popular sports in Malawi are; Rugby, golf, cricket, volleyball
and basketball. Athletics is also popular and the country is
a regular participant at the Olympic Games. Malawi is however
yet to win its first medal at this level.
