The
Mauritian Rupee (MUR) is the currency of Mauritius and was adopted
from the Indian Rupee. One Rupee is equivalent to 100 cents. The
regulation of the currency’s exchange rates and distribution
is controlled by the Bank of Mauritius.
Denominations:
Coins exist for 1, 5 and 10 Rupees. Banknotes exist for 25,
50, 100, 200, 500, 1000 and 2000 Rupees.
Exchange Rates against major currencies:
Exchange rates for other currencies against the Mauritian Rupee
are usually displayed in local newspapers in the country. There
are a number of foreign exchange bureaus within urban centers
and some banks also offer exchange services. At the time of writing
(July 2006); One American Dollar was equivalent to 30.920 MUR,
One British Pound was equal to 57.182 MUR and One Euro was equal
to 39.595 MUR.
