Monrovia
is the capital and largest city of Liberia. The city is situated
off the Atlantic Ocean and is believed to have been inhabited as
early as the 16th century.
Then known as Cape Mesurado, it was
renamed Monrovia in 1824 in honor of then US President James
Monroe. The transit of export commodities through the port
of Monrovia
is the key economic activity in the city.
Monrovia was however
substantially damaged during more than 20 years of civil
war in Liberia and the city suffered some of the heaviest fighting
during
the years of conflict. Monrovia is home to the University
of
Liberia, one of the first institutions of its kind in Africa.
