Morocco Sports:

Morocco is a leading sporting nation not only on the continent but on the world stage. The country has over the years produced a number of sportsmen who have excelled in various disciplines such as tennis, athletics and soccer. Morocco is a leading football nation in Africa.

The country’s national team “the atlas lions” has won its sole continental title in 1976 and participated at the world cups in 1970, 1986 and 1998. Famous players include Noureddine Naybet, who has played for a number of top European clubs such as; Tottenham Hotspur, Deportivo la Coruna and Sporting Lisbon as well as Mustapha Hadji who played for Nancy, Sporting Lisbon and Deportivo la Coruna.

Moroccans in Athletics:

Morocco has also produced some of the best middle distance runners. Most notable is Hicham El Guerrouj. El Guerrouj is presently the world record holder for the 1,500 metres, the mile and 2,000 metres. He also won the gold medal at the 1,500 and 5,000 m in at the Athens Olympics in 2004. He was also awarded the title for Athlete of the year in 2001 and 2002.
