Mount
Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain on the African continent. The
mountain stands at a height of 5,895 meters (19, 335.6 feet). The
mountain got its name from two Swahili words Kilima Njaro which
mean “shining mountain”. Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano.
The Mountain is situated in north-eastern Tanzania near the country’s
border with Kenya.
Mount Kilimanjaro National Park: this park encompasses the breathtaking
Mount Kilimanjaro which can be reached by road from Arusha or
Moshi. The mountain is frequented by climbers and offers a fairly
reasonable challenge. Wildlife usually in thick forested areas
includes; leopard, elephant, antelope, and buffalo.
Accommodation:
The mountain has a number of campsites for those climbing to
higher peaks. Otherwise a number of good hotels can be found
in nearby Arusha such as; the Novotel Mount Meru, Serena Mountain
Lodge and Arusha Crown Hotel, Kigongoni Lodge, Mountain Village
and Ngare Sero Mountain Lodge.
Transport:
Most visitors to Mount Kilimanjaro arrive by road from Arusha
or Moshi. The area is served by the Kilimanjaro International
Airport which handles a number of regular international flights.
The airport is situated about 50 km from Arusha.
