Football in Nigeria:

Nigeria is one of the leading football nations in Africa. The national team “super eagles” is one of the most decorated on the continent. The team has participated fourteen times at the Africa Nations Cup, winning the continental showpiece in 1980 and 1994.

The super eagles have also participated at the FIFA world cup three times; 1994, 1998 and 2002; making it through to the second round at the 1994 and 1998 tournaments. The team also surprised the world by winning the gold medal at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, beating more fancied opponents in Brazil and Argentina in the process.

The country has also produces a host of talent and many Nigerian players ply their trade in some of the top teams in Europe. Some current stars include; Aiyegbeni Yakubu (Middlesbrough), Obafemi Martins (Newcastle United), Nwankwo Kanu (Portsmouth), Wilson Oruma (Marseille), Mikel John Obi (Chelsea), Celestine Babayaro (Newcastle United).
