Paris Dakar Rally:
The
Paris-Dakar is arguably the most popular off-road race in the world.
An annual event, the rally was first held in 1979, and was a concept
introduced by Thierry Sabine. The rally’s traditional starting
point is at the Champs-Elysees in Paris and finishes in the City
of Dakar, Senegal.
The rally does not have a fixed route and recent years have
seen the changing of and starting point as well as the finish
of the rally. The rally is a key factor in putting Dakar on
the world map and is one of the city’s key attractions.
The race is open to amateur and professional drivers and has
its most challenging section in traversing the sandy North African
deserts.
