Port
Louis is the capital of Mauritius and the largest city in the country.
The city is situated on the shores of the Indian Ocean in the north-west
of the country. Port Louis is also the administrative capital of
the Port Louis district. The city has a culturally diverse population
which consists of people of Chinese, French, African, Indian and
European origin. The city is an important hub for commerce and
trade not only in Mauritius but on the African Continent.
The City is home to an important port. Other prominent industries
are food processing, clothing, chemicals, tourism and machinery.
The Mauritius Stock exchange is also based here.
Tourism in Port Louis:
The city is one of the many tourism domains in Mauritius. Port
Louis offers a number of attractions such as; the Caudan Waterfront,
China Town, Champs des Mars (an annual horse race), the Port
Louis Bazaar, the Stamp Museum and the Museum of Natural History.
Transport in Port Louis:
Port Louis is a congested city and experiences traffic jams
especially during peak hours. The main form of transport within
the city is by bus. Taxis are also available and are operated
by a number of private companies. There is no international airport
within the city and Port Louis is served by the Sir Seewoosagur
Ramgoolam International Airport which is situated near Curepipe.
