Raid on Entebbe:
The
rescue of passengers on a flight hijacked by four terrorists by
an Israeli Commando Unit took place on the night of July the 3rd
1976 ending in the early hours of the next morning. The mission
was dubbed “raid on Entebbe”, Operation Entebbe and
Operation Jonathan in respect to the operation’s commander
Lt. Col. Jonathan Netanyahu who was killed during the raid. The “raid
on Entebbe” has been turned into a number of feature films.
The Air France flight was heading for Paris from the city of
Tel Aviv in Israel via the city of Athens in Greece on the
27th of June 1976. There were 246 passengers on board and the
plane
was taken over shortly after take-off and was first redirected
to Libya before finally landing at the Entebbe Airport. The
country’s
then President Idi Amin is known to have been a sympathizer
for the terrorists.
