Saint Louis:

One of Senegal’s key cities, Saint Louis is situated northeast of Dakar, on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. The city has an estimated population of about 150,000 people. Saint Louis is the administrative capital of the Saint Louis Region. The city’s history dates back to 1659 when it became one of the first French settlements along the Senegalese coast. The city then thrived as a key port and trading center during the height of the slave trade. Other items transported through here were ivory and gold.

The city became the capital of the French colony in western Africa in 1895 and later became the capital of Senegal, a status it lost in 1957. The city has since declined in status.
