Football
is Senegal’s most popular team sport. The country is also
one of the strongest basketball nations in Africa and represented
the continent at the 2006 FIBA World Championships in Tokyo. Other
popular sports in the country are; volleyball and athletics.
Football in Senegal:
The Senegalese national team known as “the Lions of Teranga” has
appeared at the Africa Nations Cup ten times since its debut
in 1965. The team is however yet to win at this and other international
tournaments. The Senegalese team announced its entry on the international
stage when taking part at the 2002 World Cup in taken part in
Japan and Korea.
The team surprised many by beating former champions
France 1-0 in their first group match. The team went on to
draw with Denmark and Uruguay, making it into the 2nd round of
the
competition. The team then beat Sweden 2-1 before getting knocked
out by Turkey in the quarter finals. Famous players include
Mamadou Diallo, Khalilou Fadiga, El Hadji Diouf, Henry Camara,
Diomansy
Kamara, Ferdinand Coly, Papa Boupa Diop.
