Senegal
is home to a number of wildlife parks and nature reserves. The
country is home to some of the key wildlife conservation areas
in Western Africa. These are one of the main tourism attractions
in the country.
Niokolo Koba Wildlife Park: situated in south-eastern Senegal
near the Guinean border, the Niokolo is one of the best game
parks in the region. The park is home to a large number of animals
and bird species. The river Gambia flows through the park and
is home to hippopotamus and crocodiles. Other animals found here
are; buffalo, lion, leopard, warthog, antelopes, elephants, baboons,
monkeys and the giant eland. The park has a lodge and a number
of campsites. The Niokolo was declared a world heritage site
by UNESCO in 1981.
Oiseaux de Djoudj National Park: renowned for its large population
of birds (more than 350 species), the Djoudj national park is
home to flamingo, pelicans and a number of migratory birds. The
Senegal River passes through here and other wildlife here include;
crocodiles, hyena, jackal and monkeys.
