Tanzania:

Tanzania is a peaceful and stable East African nation which consists of the mainland (formerly Tanganyika) and the island of Zanzibar. Tanganyika was formerly a German protectorate in the late 19th century and was occupied by the British following the end of the 2nd World War in 1919.

Tanganyika attained its independence in 1961 and Zanzibar in 1963. The two merged to form the Tanzanian nation on the 26th of April 1964. The country’s first President Julius Nyerere implemented communist policies such as the Ujamaa system which was later declared a failure. Tanzania faced single-party rule which lasted until 1995 when the first multi-party elections were held.

Administrative divisions:

The City of Dodoma is the Capital of Tanzania and replaced Dar es Salaam in this capacity. Dodoma is home to the country’s parliament though a number of government offices and foreign embassies are still situated at Dar es Salaam.

Tanzania is divided into 26 administrative regions; Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Dodoma, Iringa, Kagera, Kigoma, Kilimanjaro, Lindi, Manyara, Mara, Mbeya, Morogoro, Mtwara, Mwanza, Pemba North, Pemba South, Pwani, Rukwa, Ruvuma, Shinyanga, Singida, Tabora, Tanga, Zanzibar Central/South, Zanzibar North, Zanzibar Urban/West.
