Timbuktu:

Situated in central Mali, Timbuktu (Tombouctou) is an historic Malian City that is believed to have been established at around the 10th century by the Tuareg people. The city grew in prominence due to its location along the lucrative trans-saharan trade route.

The city also served as a key part in the spread of the Islam religion in West Africa. Timbuktu is presently the administrative capital of the Tomboctou region. The city has an estimated population of 32,000 people. The city is one of the most visited in Mali and is served by an international airport.

Timbuktu is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and interesting places to visit are; the Sankore Mosque, the Sidi Yahya Mosque and the Djinguereber Mosque.
