Tunis:

Tunis is the capital and largest city of Tunisia. The city is situated off the Mediterranean Sea in northern Tunisia, in the Gulf of Tunis. Tunis is a tourist friendly city with a relatively low crime rate. The city has developed greatly over the last decade and here you will find a good mix of the old and the new; with modern skyscrapers and shopping complexes mixed with traditional markets selling a variety of handicraft and local produce.

An historic city, Tunis was established in the 2nd millennium BC by the Libyans and was then known as Tunes. The city later fell under the control of the Carthaginians and was torn down by the Romans in 146 BC. Tunis was later reconstructed under the rule of Emperor Augustus. The city became an administrative centre for the French protectorate established here between 1881 and 1956.

Tourism in Tunis:

The Medina (old city centre): hear you will find a good collection that reminds one of the city’s rich history and background. This includes; monuments, bazaars, mosques, palaces and cultural learning centers. The Medina was in 1979 declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
